Silo passwords

By the Silock TeamUpdated

The short answer

Any silo can have a password of its own. It's encrypted separately, so Silock's own unlock, your Face ID and the app's recovery phrase can't open it. Only its password or its own recovery phrase can.

One unlock for Silock is enough for most things. But some things need more: the silo you’d never want opened even if someone watched you type your PIN, or held your phone up to your face.

A silo password is that second lock.

How it’s different from Silock’s unlock

A password-free silo opens as soon as Silock is unlocked. A silo with its own password is encrypted separately, with its own key:

  • Silock’s unlock can’t open it. Neither can Face ID.
  • The app’s recovery phrase can’t open it. It has a recovery phrase of its own.
  • Wrong guesses are counted separately, so a guessing attempt on one silo doesn’t lock you out of the rest of Silock.

So someone who knows your Silock PIN, or who makes you use Face ID, still can’t see inside.

Setting one up

  1. When you make a silo, or later from that silo’s options, choose to add a password.
  2. Pick a PIN, password or pattern for it.
  3. Write down the silo’s recovery phrase. It’s the only way back in if you forget the password.

Worth knowing

  • To keep the Free limits fair across silos, Silock counts the photos and videos in each silo. Someone with your Silock unlock could see those two numbers for a password-protected silo, but nothing else about it: not its contents, not its files.
  • If you lose both the silo’s password and its recovery phrase, that silo is gone for good. Silock never keeps a copy of either.

Questions people ask

Does Face ID open a silo with its own password?

No. Face ID only opens Silock itself. A silo with its own password always asks for that password.

What if I forget a silo's password?

Each silo with its own password gets its own recovery phrase when you set it. If you lose both the password and that phrase, the silo can't be opened by anyone, including us.

Can I add or remove a silo password later?

Yes. You can add a password to a silo, or take it off, at any time.
